Prader Willi Syndrome: blame it on the father
Blaming this disease on the father is done not in hate. Prader Willi Syndrome is inherited from the father of a couple. It causes obesity indirectly, as well as muscular dystrophy and other symptoms. Prader Willi affects the brains of people which leads them to overeating and ultimately obesity. Not found on the 15th chromosome, is a section between segments 11 and 13. This lack of a section is the cause of Prader Willi Syndrome

The Inheritance of Prader Willi Syndrome
For a person to be born with Prader Willi, they must be missing a section of chromosome 15. Specifically, this section is on the longer "arm" of the chromosome between segments 11 and 13. This section would be involved in the processing of mRNA if it exitsed. Also, this section must come from the father. Through imprinting, fathers somehow mark chromosome 15 as coming from them, and if the child gets this chromosome they will have Prader Willi Syndrome. If they get it from their mother, they get Angleman Syndrome. |

Children gain a lot of weight of the space of their first six years of life. People with Prader Willi have an obsessive eating disorder. They are often very compulsive, have bad tempers, and are known to steal or lie. Physically, they are short, they have small hands and feet, and have almond shaped eyes. They also are known to scratch and pick at they skin, have speech impairments, and have very thick, crusty saliva. |

Detection and treatment for Prader Willi
Parents who think their children have Prader Willi notice the many symptoms of this disease first. Doctors can look at the children and tell whether the symptoms may be from Prader Willi, but blood testing is the only way to be sure. People with Prader Willi must watch what they eat. They need to exercise if they can, eat healthy, and have family that will help them eat only what they need nutritionally and not everything. Diet pills and drugs do not count as a treatment for people with this disease as it does not help them. Families must help those who have the disease; very low calorie meals and locks on the food pantries. There is no cure for this disease, only ways to live with the disease. |
